New Bike weird starting issue
#31
Cold starting is a topic close to my heart because I live in Canada where I ride year-round in temperatures down to -10C (15F) and I have chronically had cold starting issues since new, even after drilling the starter jet, checking KACR, valve clearances, compression, and trying all the dances others have described.
I eventually added an in-line fuel primer bulb which allows me to over-ride the float-valve and get the fuel level up in the carb so that the KLX fires up in winter with no-fuss.
Having said that, ‘cold’ is relative as others have pointed out. We have had an unusually warm summer up here with temperatures mostly in the 30-38C (85-100F) range and at those temperatures, I find that the drilled starter works exactly as advertised for cold starting. It’ll likely be your cure too if you are in an area warmer than Canada.
Now that overnight lows are getting near freezing, I am finding that I need to rely on the primer bulb again.

I'm curious as to how your bike handles the cold weather. I'm in Wisconsin and plan on riding as much into winter as I can. The bike has above freezing storage at home in the garage and at work in an underground heated garage (maybe 50F). I'm still 100% stock engine and exhaust wise, no mods, only a topcase and sliders so far. But parking at work sucks so I have knobbies once the snow starts to stick to the pavement. I'm currently running Pirelli Sport Demon tires. My bike also needs the choke every start, it's a klx250sf 2009.

always use the choke, i am here in Alabama so it cant get much hotter than here!! I choke it let it run while I put on my helmet and gloves, let her run just a few more then off with the choke feather the throttle and I am off

if I didnt post here
I have over 2000 miles now and it starts very easily now
maybe it was a new bike thing
but when I got the bike it was warmer summer weather so I will have to see this year if it happens again
