IME my fan comes on when I'm going less than 10 Kmh. You don't get any real airflow at that speed. I feel it's an asset and needed, especially when the mercury rises over 40oC.

If the fan works when doing this, but is not spinning well before the red light comes on, then the thermostat is faulty.
Red light comes on when the sensor on the LHS radiator reaches between 107 and 113 degrees C.
Thanks I'll give it a go, but I'm pretty sure its the fan itself that is busted, as on my brothers bike, you can turn the blades (when its off) freely and easily. Mine you have to put some force before it gives and gets stuck again.

1. If you already have a KLX and you want more/less, no way is it cheaper to go and buy another bike.
2. No way can you go and buy what I now have. It is unique.
3. Using your logic, no mod is worth while.
4. Tinkering is part of the fun.
5. I posted what was my experience when I removed the fan. Just sharing the love. And, IMO it's not worth doing. It wasn't a waste of time as I enjoyed the experiment and I learned something. Tomorrow the fan goes back on and I may or may not try something else. I'll see how I feel.
6. It is benign and some what tiresome when people say "you should have got a different bike". Well I didn't. So I'm making the most out of what I have. And having a heap of fun doing so.

Did I go too far here?
you gave your opinion..
I gave mine.
My opinion is that if you want a light weight bike... Go buy one. The KLX is in no way going to be a light weight bike without spending loads of money on it... That is my point and opinion.
I was arguing a point you put out there.
Yes, it's loads of fun tinkering with the bike. That wasn't the debate. The debate was weather it was worth all the $ spent on gps's and taking off cooling fans to reduce weight.
My opinion was...... It's not worth it. How much spent on a Gps and aftermarket headlight? In my opinion, not worth it. Just like you, puitin my opinion out there. Why would you do it, that was my question. ANd you raised a good point.. The sheer fun and enjoyment of doing it. There you go.$ and cents wise, I think it's a waiste of money. What $ you spend on that KLX will NOT come out of it, unless you come across someone that wants exactly what you wanted, but like you say, it may be worth it in fun factor. Otherwise he's going the other way. What I think is worth it, is leaving it alone, saving your money, and trading in, spending your hard earned cash you would have spent on mods, on the bike you actually want.
THAT is what I was talking about.my opinion.
No means to hurt peoples feelings.. Just my experience
KLX is an awsome bike, none the less. DOn't get me wrong. KLX is good in the right places. WHich is MANY

Just so I can understand your position here.
You will not be doing any mods to your bike at all?
But saving this money to put towards another bike?
Because any mod would by your definition be a waste of money/time.

Just to put all this in perspective, the only mod I did that cost money, and was only done to save weight, was the headlight.
All other $$ spent had other objectives.
Weight saving was sometimes a bonus.
This may come as a complete surprise but a GPS helps you navigate.

But, I intend to explore other weight saving solutions because I want to.
Some may even cost money.
And I will continue to post the results/opinions so others may benefit from my experience.
Just as I have benefitted from theirs.
I would go so far as to say that the information I have used from this site have transformed the KLX from a budget, soft, 250 dual sport bike into a reasonably competent bike that continues to surprise me with just what you can do with it.

I do get the argument about throwing money at a bike in an attempt to turn it into something else. Something that already exists.
But I challenge you to recommend a bike that I can buy that gives me what I now have with my KLX out of the box.

SOrry dude, I didnt mean to step on your toes. When you post experiences, there is going to be debate. I understand you post so others can benefit from your experience. My point wasn't to make you look stupid or rediculous. Just voicing my opinion.
Also, I never said it's pointless to do any mod. My point is, sometimes a person hasto draw the line. My line is a little closer to stock form than others.
Like I said, any mod may be worth it in fun factor. It depends on who you are and what you get out of the mods.
You're misunderstanding me.
Also, I belive it was you that I asked earler or somewhere else, if you got the gps, and headlight JUST to save weight.. You said yes.
Otherwise, I'm not an idiot, I know what a GPS is.

A question I do have for you though.
In my area we need a speedo to pass inspection. So does your GPS pass as the speedo? Or are the laws more leanient in your area?

No hard feelings mate.
I just get annoyed when people say "you should have bought this bike or that bike".
The GPS has been on for ages, I just re-fabricated the mounting when I was replacing the headlight.

In regards to the GPS and a speedo.
The Zumo 550 has a great speedo with trip meters and a sort of fuel gauge.
(You need to program your range and it calculates from there)
(I don't use it)

But, and it's a big BUT, no practical odometer.
It's got one but it's resettable and meaningless if you use the GPS with other vehicles. (and I do)
And I'm fairly sure that here you must have a working odometer on a road registered vehicle.
I don't think it's something that a policeman or ranger would worry about, but when selling the bike it might be a problem.
It's some sort of crime to interfere with an odometer which includes disconnecting it.

But heh, your a long time dead right?
It's not the crime of the century granted.
