Default Can't shift past 2nd.

Dropped the bike and bent the shifter. Bent it back then it wouldn't shift past second. Pulled off clutch cover and inspected and everything is fine the star is good and the alignment pin next to it is good. What is behind the shift star? How can I remove that? Do I need to split the cases? It's a 06 klx 250.

Are you positive the pin is not damaged?

Yeah the little gold pin that has a spring behind it on the shift star is fine no dents no scratches nothing. I'm gonna try to buy a clutch clamp and take the clutch off and look behind it this week. Anything specific to look for? I'm a newbie mechanic and could use all the advice I can get thanks!

This pin???
I think that you will break/damage the shifter pawl before it does any damage to the shift forks or drum. Usually, it's this pin that creates the symptom your experiencing.
Look closely at the ratchet mechanism for any signs of damage. You can also manually rotate the shift drum with an appropriate sized allen wrench. Rotate it clockwise to cycle the trans into 1st gear, then each detent position counter-clockwise will follow N-6th.

Yeah that pin is fine it's not bent or anything. I can grab the shift star and get it to move up into 2nd gear but after that it won't budge any. I should have a clutch holding tool in the mail tomorrow and can begin to take off the clutch. I will post updates to keep everyone informed. Thanks for the help!

I doubt that you have an issue with the clutch. With the shifter pawl/ratchet mechanism removed from the engine case, insert a hex wrench into the bolt holding the detent star on the shift drum. I would support the bike on a stand and rock the rear wheel back and forth while attempting to rotate the shift drum. If you are still unable to get the trans to change gears, then I'm afraid that you've damaged a shift fork internally. Only fix for that is to split the cases.
