Red face Time to upgrade the klx a few Q's first...

Hey Everyone,

It's time to upgrade my KLX. I don't want a loud exhaust so i'm looking for a KLX 300 can. [EDIT] I know i need the header too [/EDIT]

Q - they are sometimes on ebay - will any year of klx 300 exhaust fit my '09 klx 250? any mods needed at all? (like relocate a mounting screw hole etc?)

Q - there is one on ebay right now for $30 - it says the spark arrester is rattling, is that fixable without welding? (i can't weld)

Q - i know there is some debate over which dynojet carb upgrade to get (either between klx250 or klx300) - am i really going to notice a difference? I'm 250 feet above sea level.

Thanks!

Just get yourself a FMF Q4, you will be happy with it. It is not loud or annoying, it is right in that sweet spot of sounding good and having just a little bit of rumble. Couple it with a mega bomb and it is even quieter.

Between the two dyno jet kits 2152 or 2206, I believe the 2206 kit is the better kit. It has a more tapered needle and doesn't have any springs to mess with which a few people have had problems with.

yea, i've been looking into the FMF's for a bit. the thing is, i still have one more road test to complete before i get my full license... that means i have to keep the bike legal in Ontario... I'm not saying the FMF isn't legal, i just don't know...

I would definitely rather go with an FMF rather than a used klx 300 exhaust!

Hmm i knew about the needle difference with the carb kits, but not the springs..

Thanks!

I went with the 2152 kit and the install was very easy it has the spring and I had no issues at all. If you go the other way you will have to drill out the hole in your slide, I think the bit might be provided but I don't know as I didn't go that way. Either way I'd suggest you go with one or the other as these bikes are lean stock and there are gains to be made with the carb kit alone. I too would suggest the fmf pipe as it alone made the biggest improvment in my bike more than the jets as I did the pipe a week or so before I jetted it.

It's fine in Ontario.
I have one, and it's pretty quiet with the spark arrestor

nice... thanks for the info guys... I'm going to go with the carb kit for the 250s and probably the FMF.... if there's a legal issue, i can always put the stock exhaust on for the test haha - i dunno why i didn't think of that earlier :S

After owning the klx for 3 years, it's going to feel like a new bike! can't wait.

i'll go against everyone and say GET the klx300 exhaust if you can get it for 30 bucks (i got mine for 20, plus shipping). You DO need to get the header too though (mine was included). The good thing about the 300 exhaust is it looks exactly like stock so none thinks you messed with it, but playing with the different outlets you can put on it makes a huge difference from mild to wild (and very quiet (same or even less than stock) to pretty loud, if you but nothing in it (but it STILL has the spark arrrester if you leave it wide open....

Hey, I'd have to agree, IF you can find a deal like that on a 300 exhaust. I don't think my Q4 is $200 better than a KLX300 exhaust. Performance wise they are probably about the same, the Q4 is a bit lighter I'm sure, but like I said not $200 lighter.

i was ready to pull the trigger on the q4, but decided to wait a couple weeks to see what i could get on ebay. the 300 i got looked like it was brand new (probably taken off almost right away). and the starting bid was 19.95, and turned out i was the only bidder! it had no end cap, but i got that from the local dealer who had one laying around. i then made a couple of inserts out of another klx250 exhaust i had.
