I've been MIA for a few days. I logged a total of 143 miles in 3 days on my after work rides.

A fun ride up in the hills close to home.

First time at the pump, got 73 mpg just like they claim.

Double checked the bike upon delivery and found the battery hooked up wrong and the crank case over filled.

Mo betta

I'm in the south bay near Moffett field. I'd be down to ride, Im a total newbie with a permit right now so I ride conservatively if you are Ok with that. I get around fine and operate safely in traffic. My thing is I want to develope good habits so when I need to react I have solid skills. I've got a car I track so I've got a good, responsible mentality for the street. Bikes are just totally new and I want to ride properly.

Excellent strategy! Develop muscle memory so you don't even consciously think about how to react when the need arises. Practice drills in vacant parking lots as often as possible.

I will take the local BikeSmart class in a month or so. My problem is practicing is nice but I want to practice perfect, not practice bad habits. Luckily there are a lot of huge, vacant parking lots around here so I've been going there to work with my bike. YouTube and reading is some what helpful for getting tips and tricks but I take them with a grain of salt.

Hi all ! The OP sounds like a guy with a good head on his shoulders . Take the class and practice what they teach . Good luck.

i was actually living near by, but recently moved to san mateo...but, still pretty close...if you need some help with first oil change or valve check/reshim, just message me....might as well do some early oil changes to get the inside rinsed out....
  • santa clara cycle is great for tires and open 7 days a week if you ever get a flat
  • evolution motorcycle will do a full suspension adjustment for $40 if you feel any wiggles at higher speeds...
just ride around the road and route you know for now until the brake, clutch, throttle and shifting movements get embedded in you....you'll get it in no time...looks like you bought the green one from motor cafe looking at your dealer plate...

Yep, it was MC, I shopped around and then told them what I wanted to pay and they did it. Don't think it was the deal of the century but it was fair and some what hassle free. The parts department seemed cool and they called me when my FSM came in. I like that, most places let stuff sit until you check in and ask them.

I was going to do my first valve adjust and oil change at 600 miles then do oil services every 1,500 or 2k. That sound decent enough? I might take you up on that offer. I'm a mechanic so I've got a shop and tools to do the work...and a place to dispose of oil and filters. I just have NO experience with bikes so tips, tricks and a second set of eyes are always appreciated!

@bradl-thanks for the kind words, hopefully I'm wise enough and lucky enough to stay out of harms way on the city roads.

the valve clearance is probably fine, but doesn't hurt to do a valve check...you have very little space to slide the valve cover off, so it can be a tedious....are you doing it yourself?....

after the initial early oil changes...i run pretty high speed/high rpm freeway commutes and changing oil every 3,000 miles or so is fine...i noticed running the klx250 hard, after about 3,000 miles, i'm still "okay" on oil level, but notice it's slightly closer to the lower line between the two lines in the oil view glass...

Yeah, I plan on doing all services/repaires my self. I'm at 259 miles as of tonight so I might do my first oil change at 300 miles. I just went riding with my buddy tonight with his 650L. We had a lot of fun tooling around all the expressways and side streets. Can't wait to hit some dirt. I plan on doing uber maintenance on my bike. So far she's been running awesome! I did notice a pinch of a hair of coolant from the weep hole on the water pump. I cleaned it off and haven't seen it return yet. Maybe things are just seating in. I hope, lol...
