An "equalizing charge"? Is that what my battery tender does?

no, usually the tender just charges with about a 14.5 or voltage till the battery is charged and then the voltage drops to a float level of around 13.8 or so. some battery chargers are designed to give an equalizing charge of about 15 or more volts to attempt to desulfate a lead acid battery that is older or has been discharged to the point of the electrolytes solidifying inside. The higher voltage impressed on the battery will drive the particles back into solution. The solids can short out the plates in the battery rendering it as useful as ******* on a nun
