Brian, right up your alley, eh? I've got the microcontroller (PIC24F) program (ASM30) about 90% done. You're welcome to take a look at it if you want.
Ugh, PIC, bleh. I'm an AVR guy myself. Or maybe the venerable 'HC11 in a pinch. Sorry, can't help with PIC, I can't contort my brain that badly to jump through their architecture hoops.

Anyone know where I can get the connectors that will mate with the wiring harness at the CDI? I haven't been very lucky in finding automotive connectors, anyone have a source?
The local Kawsaki service dept usually have bins full of all the various pins and connectors that these bikes take, the tech's ay the Kawi shop up the road from me are very helpful and so far (knock on wood) have handed over any that I have needed.

GM dealers used to have the terminal pins seperatly.

No, I haven't given up yet. Been sidetracked with the Moto-Pro suspension install. I've got things mostly working on the bench now. I've got a problem with voltage regulation to the CDI capacitor to take care of, but proof of concept is there. Haven't added the 12V to 3.3V regulator yet, currently running off of a dual power supply. I'm able to produce a regular spark at the plug. I posted this somewhere else, but's here's my "lab".

Over on the left is a drill press with a junk KLX300 flywheel and coil pickup, I'm assuming that they're pretty much the same as the KLX250S. Can't go very high in the RPM range with the drill press, but needed to see what the pulse off of the coil looked like. I'm typically using the pulse generator for getting the higher rpm pulse. (kind of funny, I didn't get the flywheel cleaned up completely, still some oil in the nooks and crannies, flung it on the wall behind the drill press and everywhere else).

On the right foreground in a KLX250S coil and plug. The o'scope shows the pulse going into the PIC.

Still have a lot of work left on this. As we say in engineering, the last 10% of a project takes 90% of the time.
