Iowaguy can you post the link to the dyno #s for the 28 hp klx250s w/ all the modifications.

I seen a shootout w/ a xt250 yamaha, crf230 honda and a klx250s somewhere, they claim on the dyno a 18.66 hp output for the klx... of course the klx won the shootout.

No where to be found is the hp of a 08 or 09 wr250r yamaha.

Can anyone expect a 5 hp increase if they get the 300 airbox and australian spec jetting w/ no smog equipment? Isn't the aussie slide drilled differently also?

Just wondering
I tried the search but it has been a while back and I couldn't locate the thread. Maybe someone else can find it. It's on here- 28 rwhp for a worked KLX big-bore: cams, port/polishing, etc. pretty sad imo.

How much does a typical dyno run cost? Is it the availability that is an issue?

I remember looking some places around town before I got the bike. If it's not some ridiculous price for a few runs then I'll definitely be hitting one up once I get my SM wheels properly set up.

I'm no expert like all the Ph.D's in Mechanical Engneering we have here at KF, but I would think not having the cat converter is the biggest thing. Those things SUCK. If you found a stock AUS pipe and airbox and rejetted the bike to match, I would think you could get it. But all the money you'd probably pay to buy it and have it shipped from Down Under, you could just buy a Muzzys or similar aftermarket exhaust.

Even though I disagree about modding this bike being useless, I will agree with 09KLX in that there's no way this bike will ever hold a candle to a DRZ-400S in the dual-sport department. With just a jetkit and the 3x3 mod my dad's '06 HAULS. I bet that after I get a Muzzys and jet accordingly, I'd still barely be able to hang in a straight-line dead heat. Better suspension out the box. It comes geared about as ridiculous as the KLX from the crate so that's a wash. The KLX is lighter and more nimble and has 6 speed transmission. If your ultimate goal is to make this bike into a DRZ, you will fail, and fail miserably. This is a beginners bike, which is why I got it. When I outgrow it in a few years, I'll get myself a DRZ-400 or maybe Kawi will make a KLX-450 -S .

No one ever said anything about a modified DRZ400 (even pipes and jet kits)

You have to make a choice with DS bikes because theres not a large selection. I didn't get a DRZ400 because its heavier and bigger.

There are so many things you can do to this bike it isn't even funny because of the above statement. Some things I can think of right now haven't even been posted on here. You have to use your imagination.

this bike is so corked up its barely runable. And I'll bet most of our bikes stock aren't even putting out the rated amount. Its probably more like 14 or 15 or something. Because if it peaks at 8500 RPM, my bike when I first got it would never even reach that RPM because it cut out so bad from being lean, plus it felt like it felt like it was being revved so hard it was gonna blow. Now that I have the crank drilled out and the Air injection removed it revs so much more free.

well, and not to be dickheadish or assholish here, you kind of did when you threw out the "double the horsepower" statement. You're talking at least 36 horse then, and it has been documented that it does make at least 18 to 19rwhp. Dirtbike television dynoed a stock '07 I believe.
Doube the horsepower would be just a hair above oem DRZ horsepower minus the tractor torque the DRZ makes. That's why he was talking about the modded DRZ. I had a DRZSM, I didn't mod it much, just the gearing and muffler. But with just a 3x3 mod, minus the buttplug, and some jetting it can approach 40rwhp. That will cost you around $10 for jets.
It's been proven on here by NB and some other guy that went above and beyond NB with cams and headwork that the KLX is only good for around 28rwhp with the bank thrown at it minus a stroker kit which would be silly for this bike. If you're looking for that power, just buy a bigger bike. So no one is arguing with you, just trying to show you the light so your statements don't someday tell someone that their wussyish oem KLX can make 36 horse without much investment. Because that just isn't possible.

.
I forgot to mention my dad has an Ebay tip on his. Sounds so much better than the stock plug. 14/47 gears, REAL knobby tires, 3x3 mod and JD jetting kit, his bike handles its own The reason *I* didn't get one is this is my first bike, I wanted something not too powerful and heavy, and the ability to put my feet on the ground.

The KLX can be made to put out decent power, with a significant invesement. Double the horsepower? I don't see it.

The 26.82 hp 19.79 lbs torque from klx 331 post back in 1/3/07. That is alot of work for 8+ hp.

What is that about 225 samoleeans per horsepower? - big bore, pumper carb, cam, full pipe system, ignition... OLI CHIIT!!
