'04 klx250s...what next??

The next artificial reef candidate?
Seems too many of our Navy's vessels are under tow these days!
I'm using the PJ25 in my '03DRZ, along with the DJ needle/spring and 142.5MJ. It ran like jack-the-bear in the Shuswap Lk area(1,200-7,000' asl) but is pinging badly down here in Langley at 10' asl.
What jetting are you running at the moment in the 400?

I'm running stock jetting, 22.5pj, 142.5 MJ with the needle shimmed .5mm and the a/f at 3 turns. She seems a bit lean up top and a bit surgey cruising at certain speeds and rpm. I'm running without the snorkle, I should put it back it....but....I sold the klx400 today about an hour ago...
I bought the klx400 to profit on it. I paid 1500, put about 500 into it(tires, chain, sprockets, misc other stuff) got it played and street legal....And sold it for 3700.
I'm currently looking at a couple different bikes...a dr650, husaberg 650, plated tm250 2t, or a 08 klr650.
So advice is needed....knowing I'm gonna keep the klx250s until I die, or at least until it's paid for; should I get a more street cruiser friendl klr or dr650, or a monster of a husaberg650fe or Tm250 2t plate mx'er...hmmmm?????

I shimmed the needle on the wife's DRZ Supermoto, (now sold) also adding the 25PJ, yet it had no bottom-end *snap*. My '03 DRZ400S pulls hard....I give most of the credit to the DJ needle. The 25PJ lets it pull IMMEDIATELY off idle...it almost catches me off-guard at times.
That KLX was a gift.
As for recommendations...I've only got an hr on a DR650. Nice bike, easy rider, slower handling than the dRZ, needs help to make more power, but that's easily done, I believe. Tough, reliable and I'd have one for dual sporting where quite a bit of road was involved.
The KLR is a little too relaxed for me...I am a racer at heart (still dreaming, as you can see) and the KLR and I wouldn't get along well enough.
If you're looking for something else to add to the stable you need to start with defining, clearly, the mission it is to serve. The DRZ is a far better dirt bike than road bike, the DR650 holds the opposite position. It would kill me to ride my DRZ to California. I'd actually prefer the KLX250 over the dRZ. BUT, the DR650 would be so-so OK on the same mission.
I'm currently evaluating various bikes, looking at bigger road bikes....but I keep sneaking a peek back at the potential hooligan lying within the KTM 690....and the F800GS....and the new V-Strom 1000. And I loved the torquey engine in the Bandit 1250S.
Get the mission figured out and the rest will fall into place!
(PS....if you'd ridden my DRZ I'd bet a bag 'o cold popcorn you wouldn't have sold your 400KLX quite so easily)

Well buddy, you know my collection includes the last production year of the FE650E (2008). I bought it off the showroom and ride it occasionally at my ranch and it's been to most all the riding ranches in Tx. I also raced it a few times X/C.. It has never seen the repair shop. It is not fun to just putt putt around on - it wheelies or ruins the lawn with every little blip of the throttle and will throw you over the handlebars when you stall the engine. It is not fun to ride on the pavement - the traction you get makes responsible throttling a must, for survival. The g-forces you suffer while riding it aggressively are tiring. While all this is the god's honest truth, I wouldn't trade it for anything!

I passed on the husa 650, it was a bit rough, and the owner had it running before I came and saw it....big red flag for me....
When I bought the klx250 it was a toss up between that and a dr650, the klx250 won the coin toss and I havent been disappointed....but I always yearned for a 650 adventure style bike I could take to baja or Alaska on a whim...well the stares aligned and I made an offer on a low mile 2006 dr650...I'm picking it up tonight!!!! Anyway the next chapter has turned and im planning some adventure rides for the spring and summer. Don't worry the klx isn't going anywhere, neither am I.
Included not pictured is a 4.3 gallon tank, seat looks aftermarket or custom, very nice, I also have bars and handguards for it....
