Then Ninja 500 is a great cheaper first bike but.... it is not the most comfortable of bikes and not great for long rides and is not as refined and does not handle as well as the much newer designed Versys.
You did not just say this...lol The lil ninja rocks on long cruises IMO Welcome to KF

I think I've decided on the Ninja 250. I went up to the local dealer and checked it out and it seemed to be a good bike for my first time out. The price of it played a huge part in the decision, but I still have a couple months to go before I officially purchase one and I will be looking for a cheaper, used Versys as well. I also liked how it was a pretty bare bike and you could make it your own pretty much, so not all of them are the same. The more I think about getting one and making some changes to it the more excited i get haha!

Thanks for the feedback on the bikes.... I really like them but I haven't seen anyone with a Versys so it was good to get a true opinion on them. I'm sure i'll be back with more questions ha

I've owned both a 500 and Versys. I would buy a 500 before a 250. The 500 has a huger following so parts are cheap and easily avail. It is a better bike and they sell for similar prices. They Versys is a newer design than the 500 and has a more comfortable upright seating position but is also more expensive. If price is a factor get the 500. There is not usually much price difference between the 500 and 250.

In budgeting for bike don't forget the cost of things like insurance and gear (helmet, jacket, pants, gloves boots, etc.) It's very easy to spend $1000 on just basic gear.
