The main reason for the break-in is so the transmission gears wear-in well and the rings seat. The reason they tell you to take it easy is so all the mating gears, cams/ lifters, and rings get set in to each other. It used to be that in the old days, the machining wasn't as smooth & precise and it took longer for the rough surfaces to wear-in together. So if you took it easy, they would slowly & smoothly wear together but if done hard, the metal could start galling or wearing out pre-maturely. The metal, machining and oils are so good nowadays that most all parts have high quality finishes on them. I would recommend changing the oil within the first 100 and again at 300-400miles just to get rid of all if any fine metal dust/ particles in the oil. I have seen some "FUZZ" on the oil drain bolt with the magnets in place so there is evidence that there is some metal wear happening inside the engine. Most of it from the transmission gears.

Speed where do you get these magnet oil plugs? Would they be worth it even though my bike has 10-11K on it?

Try Harbor Freight or Northern tools etc. Maybe be even Home Depot, Lowes or Ace Hardware. They are called Super Magnets (Rare Earth Magnets). I got some in an assorted pack. There were a couple of different sized little flat round (Coin like) ones that I put directly on the head of the drain plug. I had some small square ones I put on the flats of the oil filter also.

i bought a new 07 zx6r a month ago. i now have 540 miles on mine.... i have kept it under 8k for the most part... in break in, IMO, after all i have heard, you wanna break it in.. run the engine through its gears and break it in. they key is letting the engine get hot, then letting it cool down. THAT is how your rings seat. keeping it at 6k till 1000 miles is crazy. the new bikes are made so tough, they will last forever. enjoy your motorcycle.
