Temperature outside effects RPM's???
Hey guys, Ive been a bike rider for two weeks, 250r being my first. I am at 980 miles, and I am about to take it in for first maintenance...but ive noticed, after I felt I broke it in, I noticed that in the same gear, and the same speed, my rpm's were higher than usual. its been very hot outside, until a recent night ride showed I wasn't crazy, the rpm's were much lower. EX. when hot out, in 6th gear, going 80 mph, I was at 11500 rpm's.....when it was 55 degrees the other night, 6th gear, going 80 mph, i was at 9500-10000 rpm's. Please tell me I am not crazy. Oh, and when I first start the bike, it idles at 1000 rpm, and after hot, very close to 2000.
Ask the mechanic at the dealership, I have a 2009 and it varies when I ride into the wind. My bike runs alot better when its warmer out. They are somewhat cold natured.
Yeah, that will help and ripping out that pollution control stuff after the warranty expires ain't a bad idea either.
The gearing defines the relationship between engine revs and road speed. It's fixed and can't alter - at least, not unless the clutch is slipping. Most likely it's your speedo or tacho being affected by the heat, or maybe you weren't in the gear you thought you were in.
Your idle speed will alter as the bike warms up and will also be affected by the degree to which you've got choke on. SEt the correct idle speed (1300RPM?) on a properly hot engine and don't worry about what it's at when cold.
