My new ride
#13
For a new rider, especially on what is really too powerful a bike to really learn on, I'd advise against listening to music at all.
I'd also advise against spending time and money on mods and accessories, as once you've started to learn to ride properly you may well rethink all of your earlier choices.

I agree that the ipod can be a distraction for a new rider, but when your ready for it, I have an earbud in one ear, doesnt hinder my situational awareness as anything you can hear over the wind noise I can hear over the ipod as well. However at highway speeds you wont be able to hear it very well without turning it up to ear damaging levels, so you wont be missing out on much.

I can see where listening to music may be a distraction. Especially if you are trying to change programs while riding kind of thing or it is too loud to hear your surroundings. I wear the ear buds on the street and ear plugs while on the track.
The ear plugs are almost too good for my tastes so I use the cheaper ones so that I can still hear what is happening. I keep the ipod turned down for the street for the same reason.
