Default wishin' it was a little bigger

Yesterday going home I was forced to stop for a state trooper standing in my path. Great I thought, now what. Then he informs me that the flood waters have cause the bridge to go out and I would be forced to jump on the interstate to get home. This would be I-80 running through Nebraska so speed limit is 75 aka 85. I've never had my bike that open I didn't buy it to run the interstate. but I drop me head and head for home. I was surprised, the bike came close to running with traffic with my 200 pound frame. I think if it was a 300cc it would be fine I was able to muster and maintain about 71mph (gps rated not speedo). So that leaves me asking, short of dropping the coin for the 351 kit can anyone think of a way to get a few more miles per hour? Sounds like the bridge will be out for a while and I'm not willing to park the bike and drive the truck. oh and my 71 was at 8,000 rpm it wont redline in 6th.

thanks

oh I should note my bike is stock geared, has a fmf q-4 with a DJ jet kit and uni filter

The cheapest and easiest way would be to run taller gearing (somewhere between 15/42 and 15/39 should do the trick) until they fix the bridge.

"That's what she said..."
Sorry, couldn't resist..
I was out wednesday on my bike, first doing much on the interstate since I did my exhaust and other mod stuff, I have the 13t front gear. I was doing 86-87 indicated speedo with some throttle left (and not tucking) I weigh an easy 250 before putting on jacket helmet boots etc. I think you will actually get a bit more by gearing down a notch in the front, this bike stock just doesn't have the pull to move it in sixth gear stock, it's a cruising gear only, especially at your altitude. Of course if you're doing a long stint on 80, then you're going to be revving it out for a long time and you may not like that. That said, I'm thinking from frame of reference of an S, not an SF...

I dont envy riding I-80 in NB on this bike... I wont tell you the mean things I say about driving that stretch of road from my many cross country trips to WY.

Neway, some other things you could do to get a bit more out of your ride cheaply:

Check out the mod day thread at the top of this forum, a variety of freebie mods listed that can help out a bit especially if you drill the exhaust and rejet.

For reference, my bike has a full exhaust, that runs about $500 though, and probably is why I can pull whatever 86 speedo really is (maybe 78-80 or so?) I quit where i did and didn't go all out because my suspension is not set up perfect yet and I was getting in the zone where i could feel some head-shake coming on and that's just not a happy place to be on the interstate at that speed. however i held it between 75-85 indicated for about 8 miles, good times!

LOL....Yeah she said that to me once....then I fired back " Well I wish you were a little smaller".....yup I sleep on the couch (by my choice of course....lol)

So maybe a sprocket change will work for a few weeks while it gets fixed, I have a 18 mile run to work normally I run highway 30 and this bike cruises at 60mph no problem.

What is stock 13/39? Maybe I can look it up to see I forget what it is.

Thanks guys

I'm going to track down a 13 tooth this weekend, that seems to be the cheapest way to go. we'll see what happens
