LOL.... when I added my KLX to my motorcycle policy (I also have an '08 Versys)... full coverage increased my monthly bill by $4.98

 

One consideration is location. In the east here in Ohio the trails and even the dirt/gravel roads can be tight. Light weight is rewarded. I have experienced that going from my KLX650 big bore to my near stock KLX250. A big bore is definitely a possibility because it would be nice to pick up power through the entire power range. Peak horsepower doesn't matter as much as the torque curve in my use. It's about roll on power. Then, of course, that few pounds up higher makes the DRz/KLX400 not quite as nimble.

Still at the price if one had to buy again, the 400 would make sense. But if one already has the KLX250 it's only $600 for the big bore and gaskets (about) if one does their own work. Doesn't matter which bike you buy, the suspension will need work, DRz or KLX, 250 or 400. So it's kind of what opportunities the situation presents.

Where I am at more nimble is rewarded. One has to look about and figure what will do the job best.

I will say I wouldn't spend all the money on head work and cams, that is time to consider going to something bigger, that stuff will possibly reduce engine life.

It would be cool to find a plated KLX450 or a CRF450X, but I'm thinking probably way too much power considering most enduro/harescrambles/XC riders will go 350 or 300-two stroke over the big bores when racing in SE Ohio.

KLX400/DRZ has a bit more weight and power than the KLX351.
KLX351 has 6spd.

I have both and prefer the 351 YMMV.
