Default What time to shift, and the break-in of my 09

Hey guys,

Today it is officail, I just bought a 2009 red klx 250s. It is my first bike and I am pretty excited. I was curious what your recommendation was for the best way to break it in. Also what should be the normal RPM to shift to the next gear?

Decide before you ride! Because.....The Mototune "fast Break In" needs to be done right away. Otherwise you'll be stuck doing the slow break in as outlined in the manual. I did the slow painful break-in keeping it under 4,000 rpms for 600 miles. And under 6,000 rpms for the next 400 miles.

I broke mine in riding like I would ride normal. The only specific things I did was not go over 7000RPM and I did not hold a constant RPM for the first 1500km. and I changed my oil and filter about 4 times in the break in period. During break in I shifted aruund the 5-6k mark.

I am and will always be strongly against multiple oil changes during break-in. The oil from the factory is a break in oil designed to help all the parts to seat properly. Taking out the break in oil can result in an engine that doesn't break in properly and end up burning oil. I went by the book with my break in and first oil change because I believe that Kawasaki actually knows what the are doing.

I've done 350kms. Changed oil and filter at 270kms. It was fairly dark (but didn't have any crap in it). Oil at present is a nice golden brown. I won't change again until first service at 1000 kms. That's just me. Also, local dealer agreed with this routine.
As has been said ad nauseam on this and other forums - you'll get 1000 differing opinions/suggestions on oil changes during break-in.
For actual break-in, I'm about the same as SavageKen i.e ride it how you intend to carry on (without going stupid).
Have fun - great bikes!

If you haven't already seen this site, check it out:

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Break in procedure is very contoversial. I've used MotoMan's break in procedure on three different bikes including the KLX250S. I sold my VStrom with 113,000 miles. It never used any oil. I sold my SV650 with 68,000 miles with no oil consumption. The new SV owner pulled the pistons somewhere around 75K miles, and I was amazed. They looked nearly new.
I bought my KLX250S a month ago, it only has a few thousand miles on it. We'll have to wait and see on it.

Enjoy your KLX. It's so much fun!
