Default Switched power for accessory, where to tap?

I'm looking for a place to tap into the wiring harness for a low amp accesory (USB power for GPS). Is there an extra lead or a "best place" to tap into the harness?

Either switched power or ground would be fine.

i added a 12v outlet with a double usb outlet directly connected to the battery.(makes charging easy too) did the same when i installed heated grips, however i also added a relay to the grips connected to the headlight so i cant accidently leave them on.

The USB connector I bought has a small LED light that is a constant draw. Also, I am pretty spacy about leaving stuff running on the bike. A dead bike is bad, but a dead bike in the woods is really bad.

I think I am going to tap into the red white wire that is under the seat, near airbox. I believe that this is power for the tail light.

Yeah, I gotta do the same thing. No light on mine, but my USB port also has a constant draw. Forgot about it, didn't plug the bike into my battery tender for 5 weeks. The battery was so dead after that, it no long takes a charge. It's shot. So when I buy a new battery, I'm either going to rewire it to only work with key on, or just put a switch inline so I can turn power off to it when not riding. I use the USB all the time to power my iPhone for my GPS. So, needless to say, I'm interested in what you wire into.

if you are worried like i was about having a dead bike, just add a relay using one of those key on power wires. i did it this way because the key on power wires don't have enough juice for my accessories. And absolutely no drain with the key off

Having the GPS switched is a PITA. If your GPS battery is dead, and your lost, and everytime the bike dies or you take a break, you have to reload all the GPS situation. It is just easier to leave it on.

I had to add a USB cut-off switch to keep the battery from draining.

I think splitting the red/white wire at the under the seat juncture is the answer.

The USB only draws 1.5 A on a 5-volt circuit. There are higher and lower estimates of this, but the draw is low. So, on a charging circuit running 13.8 A the draw after the step down would me much less than an amp. I already replaced the rear tail light with an LED, so whatever the draw on circuit from the USB charger will be much more than compensated for by the reduced draw of the lamp. I believe the draw on the bulb is about an amp, so I am more than covered.

Since the USB is charging the battery in the GPS, the GPS can stay on even if the motorcycle is powered down.

I own a proper open barrel crimping tool and connectors so I will wire in a double female terminal like this:

For what it's worth, owning a crimping tool makes electrical work so much easier. It's as if you'd only ever worked on your bike with vise grips and suddenly someone gave you a set of wrenches. I literally went back over every splice I ever made on my 7 motorcycles and replaced them all.
