Default stiff chain?

How 'stiff' shoulda coldchain be? This is the first time I've had the chain off and I was surprised at how stiff the links are even after soaking it with citrus degreaser (pretty mild stuff), rinsing with water and coating with WD40. I don't know if the chain has ever been properly cleaned, and there is a fair amount of surface rust. It certainly smelled like gear oil had been used previously.

I mean, I figure there would be some internal resistance since they're packed with some pretty thick grease, but should you be able to do this??

Hey That chain is SO DONE there not much money you need a new one for sure..... Dirt and water is very hard on a chain..... I use the clear chain lube and I use a nylon brush to clean mine ofter the I blow it off with and air hose then I wrap a rag around it and spray the rag and the chain and spin the wheel to get it good and lubed it has worked well for me over the years with bikes and sport quads..... Hope this helps

So you're saying there should be little to no resistance between the links? The bike only has 2,000 miles on it, 500 of which are mine. I'm going to be pissed if I need a new chain.

The O-rings are probably what's causing the resistance. Just do the stretch test on it. If it hasn't stretched beyond it's specified limit found in the manual then it is fine. Lube it up well of course. I would put an inch of 90 weight in a bucket and drop the chain it and let it sit overnight.

Yeah, I lubed the heck out of it with some PJ1 Blue Label clear o-ring stuff when I put it back on. It seems fine on the bike- smooth, no kinks, chain adjusters only on the third notch. I was just surprised at how tight it was when I took it off.

That is fairly typical of o-ring chains. They suck a little power due to that, but their relatively ease of maintenance more than makes up for it for most folks. You can get a non-o-ring chain for a lot cheaper than an o-ring chain, but it requires a lot more care.

Oh no! I didn't mean to start one of those! I take it this has been discussed before then?
