David,
I just rode it up and down the street today after letting it sit for a week waiting for another thermostat. It didn't start this time but that's because the battery wasn't strong enough to turn the engine over. I charged it and still wouldn't quite turn over but I eventually got it to fire up. I think my problem might be with the jetting. I am running the same jets as I was before the 351 kit. Still waiting on those jets to come in that I ordered.
All I can say is that it has significantly more torque with the 351 kit and that is with terrible jetting. The engine sounds like it is going to sputter to a stop every 10 seconds when idling so I just turned the idle screw up enough to let it idle around 3000 rpm just to try and getting the new engine broken in a little bit. I also noticed that when I turned the throttle a half turn that I would get a real good puff of dark smoke out of the pipe. I had put some seafoam in the tank just before I broke down so I am not sure if that is still just burning through or if my jetting is just that bad. Anyway, when the jets get here, I will pull the carb again and get it more in line with what others have done with their jetting. I think I am going to a 132 main and pilot one size higher than stock and simply make some slight adjustments with the air/fuel screw.

dacoontz You do not have a clue how well that bike is going to run.

Black smoke = too rich. Could be from a sticking slide or something else. I have a 132 main and it works fine. Not sure if its the best yet, but I gained a ton of torque. Its a whole new bike. I am also still using the stock Idle jet at 2 3/4 turns right now. I need to try it at 2.5. I have to turn that little stock screw in the carb, so 1/4 turn takes me a few minutes.

Because of your running problems, I would remove the carb and get it straightened out before running the bike much more. If its smoking black you COULD have way too much fuel washing those new rings and cylinder walls causing break in problems.

I think once I changed the smog thing and removed the vacuum hose to it, the bike ran richer on idle. I plugged the port on the carb with a rubber cap. After that it was too rich cold start and too rich warm at 3 1/4 turns out.

David, got my pilot's today so time to pull the carb and get her straight and then really see how she runs. Thanks again for the info.
