Removal Of Front Sprocket

Removal Of Front Sprocket
Hi All,
I've purchased a 13t front sprocket to replace the original, thinking it would be relatively easy to replace (I haven't worked on bikes since my RM250 about 15 years ago)..
So I take off the little cover, bend the metal plate back that stops the bolt from coming loose and proceed to attempt to loosen the nut.. Holy Sh**, I cannot get it to budge.
What I am trying to confirm is if it is clockwise or anti-clockwise to loosen, also will I need to break the chain to replace the sprocket or can I take the sproket off, wiggle the chain off and then put the chain back on the new sprocket and re-install, the adjust the chain... Any tips for loosening this bolt, I had my daughter stand on the back brake to lock the back wheel, but basically ended up lifting the whole bike up trying to loosen. Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Chris.

The best way to get it loose is with a 1/2" air rachet and it is counter clockwise. you do not need to do anything to the chain but you will need to adjust it it will be very loose when you get the new one onThe air rachet will take it wright off......a hand impact will work but your hammering in on the output shaft and that is not recomended
Good Luck

RE: Removal Of Front Sprocket
I typically have to strap mine down on my bike stand and have someone stand on the back brake with it in gear. A 4 foot long cheater bar takes care of it. Pound the entire washer flat, mine had a slight cup shape to it even after bending down the 1 tab. I was lifting 300lbs of machine and the 200lb of my brake holder. Went around the washer again with a punch and it came right off.

Thanks Guys,
Managed to get it off with the socket and using the pipe from the vacuum cleaner as a cheater bar (don't tell the wife, she actually thought I was going to vacuum). Anyway I have the new sprocket on and all back together, I have adjusted the rear adjusters from 2 to 3.5, the tension feels good, I tried to get it the same as it was originally, hopefully I've got it right, I will take it for a ride tommorrow and see how it goes.
Cheers
