RE: pumper carb installed
actualy i was going to leave the snorkel on. i misunderstood what he was saying. i thought that if the skip/stutter was gone the jetting was good. you are the one to point out that i was missing out on how the carb is supposed to perform. i'm going back in there this week sometime. i have to recover from the abuse it put me thru on sunday. what i didn't tell anyone before was i think that i stripped the throttle cable mounting bracket screw. honestly i thought that it was a simple swap. carb for carb. so when that screw was going in hard i thought "no big deal i'm almost done". of course i then found out that i had to jet it properly.. it was a misunderstanding on my part. i'm not too worried though i've screwed things up worse than this before. I can fix it "my dads a t.v. repair man and has an awsome set of tools" I love that line...

RE: pumper carb installed
Is it possible to rotate the Mikuni in its boots in order to rejet without completely removing it? I couldn't do that with the FCR because it is so tall, but it might be possible with yours. If you can, that will definitely make things easier. But ultimately, I just resigned myself to at least a half-hour every time I had to rejet. That makes you plan carefully that next jet change because you'd like it to be the last. That's one of the reasons I did my O2 sensor because when you are close it's hard to know exactly what direction to go. I think what Marty said he was going to do was to do a series of timed max speed runs over a fixed distance, increasing the jet size until the speed over that distance is maxes out and then drops, then go back one size. That should properly size the main jet, anyway. You have to ride pretty consistently run after run for that to be effective though.

brian,
i'll try and rotate it first. that's what i did with the stock carb when i jetted it and it worked fine. there may not be enough room between the throttle cable bracket and the head though.
