Default Oil Change

Ok here is what I have done thus far.

Hard break in using the Mototuneusa site,

1st oil change 40 miles

2nd oil change 200 miles

3rd oil change 540 miles

4th oil change 1000 miles

I currently have 1500 miles on the bike. Here is my question. The manual seems to suggest changing the oil once a year or at Kilometer intervals of (0.6) or 600 km, (7.5) or 7500 km, (15) 15,000 km and so on. Doesn't that sound like a lot of miles between changes to anyone else besides me? What have you guys done on older bikes, like the KLR? It just doesn't sound right. In fact it's the first time I have seen scheduled maintenance that wasn't unreasonably too frequent. Any thoughts?

Default RE: Oil Change

I would say it depends on how you ride and how frequently you ride and change it however often you are comfortable with. Following the manual on our Sportsman 500 HO I have 2000 miles on it and have changed the oil 3 times, but then again it runs 0-40 synthetic and the oil comes out clean. On our KLX I changed the oil at 200 miles, will again at 600, and probably every 600-1000 after that, or yearly whichever comes first.
