Default Do You Always Change Filter @ Oil Change?

So far I have changed my oil about 5 times on my bike. I have about 3400 miles on it. I don't know if that is a lot of oil changes for that many miles or not, but I pretty much try to change it about every 1000 or 1200 miles or so. I changed it at 20 miles, 120-ish miles, 600 miles, about1800 miles (I think) and the last one at at about 2800 (just before TdAII).

Each time I have also changed the filter. My question is this - does everyone always change the filter with each oil change, or would it be more normal to change the filter like every other oil change. I am sure that there are as many opinions as there are people reading this, but I would like to see some discussion on the topic.

Thanks, Chris

Seems like I'm pretty much on the same schedule as you, Chris. Since the break in period is over, I plan on changing my oil every 1200 miles or so. I've always changed my filter every other oil change on all my bikes.

My 2 cents worth.

I change my bikes once a year (once broken in) with new filter every time. I have to put bikes up for winter so they dont get year round use.

I change my oil and filterevery 600 miles. I have experienced too many problems because of lack of oil changes. It is better to spend the $10 to change your oil, then to spend much more to fix a broke bike.

Exactly, how much is an oil filter.... 2.99? Well id rather have that piece of mind, and you cant change your oil and filter too much, so why not just do the filter too? I do mine every thousand miles, oil and filter.

[sm=exactly.gif] But I change mine at 1000-1500 now that it's broke-in.

I change mine every 1860MI (3000KM), but all my miles are road miles. It gets a new filter on every other oil change. My oil looks fairly clean at that interval.

My filter was a bitch to get at after installing full exhaust so every other time was out of laziness. Plus manufacture recommends every other as well.

You have to look at how your bike is being used as well, my commenter was roiling 55 miles each way on the freeway everyday. Good for the bike, as apposed to someone how may only put 100 miles on there bike on the week end and running it hard around town.

I used to use Motul full synthetic oil as well so the new oil was costing 48 bucks and at 100 miles a day I was changing my oil every 6-10 weeks.

Oh yea when I sold her this year got 4500 for a 2000 R1, not bad, but I miss her [&o]

I change oil and filter every 1,000 kms which is around 600 miles. Probably excessive as most of my riding is road, but oil is cheap compaired to parts and labour.
