I just bought an 09 KLX and a friend of mine just bought a 08 DRZ. We had them out for the first time today. Here is a picture of the two bikes. We went back and forth between the two bikes when trying to decide which one to buy.(and the KTM, but couldn't get by that $ tag)He ended up liking the DRZ and me the KLX. I will post more once they are broken in. (doing so something between what the manual says, and what is reasonable)
But for now we both have rode each bike, and they both have their goods and bads. The DRZ feels heavier, but has more power, feels taller, and wider bars.The KLX seems to feel overall tighter and more nimble, has some better features, It feels much lighter, even though it is really not that much. The DRZ seat is a bit more comfortable. They are both great bikes, both need some mods.
One thing with my 09 KLX is the CA model says not to fill the tank up all the way, so even less gas capacity. It recycles the fuel fumes through the carb, so if gas splashes into the fume system you run really rich.

Grats on your new bike , i enjoy the hell out of mine. Also, those ppl who tell you not fill your gas tank up all the way also eat there own body hair, because vegetables have feelings.

Has anyone out there with an 09 KLX CA model filled the tank all the way to the top? If so, how did it work out?

 

Put a Clarke gas tank on and don't worry about it.

 

Do they have a metal one that will fit a 09? I looked up Clarke tanks, and they don't say 09.Plastic won't pass inspection in NJ. WHen I have gone through inspection they put a magnet to the tank.

 

I do like that black, grey and white DRZ! Note: Nothing worse than a blank number side plate - get some decals guys!!

 

I'm not aware of a metal aftermarket tank. The KLX gas tank is easy to swap if it comes to that for inspections ...
