Larger fuel tank?

I agree with Deej, a bigger tank but no mods to the bike. I'll buy one!!!

Hey cwgoff, didn't you put the KLX300 tank on your bike? After you get back from the TOUR and all that balmy weather any tips would be appreciated.

Chris,
Thanks for theinfo and photos inthe next post. That strap is going to be on order from my local dealer tomorrow. Does your dads KLX250S have the KLX300 tank? I am curious about the radiator fans and coil placement and also of any tabs or anything that might need to be removed to get that 300 tank in there.

Just to confirm - you are going to have to ditch the stock radiator fan. It absolutely will not work with the larger tank. The guys with the IMS tanks have wired weatherproof compter fans into the stock fan harness as a good replacement. I have the fans, but I have not installed them yet. I have been running for about a month with no fans and have had zero problems. That's not too surprising since it is winter, but I put it to the test a bit with 4 days for riding at the Tour de Apalachicola with no fans. I never even came close to needing them. With that said, though, I will be installing them for peace of mind in the next week or so.
You don't need to relocate the coil, but it is pretty close. It wouldn't hurt to put in a spacer like BMWHD did. I am not sure if Nobrakes moved his or not. I have not moved mine, but I might do that when I do the fans.
You mentioned removing tabs. I had forgotten until just this moment that I did Dremel off the two hooks that serve as guides for the wiring harnesses. Now that I remember that, it makes much of what I said earlier about maybe not needing to do the wiring a moot point. You pretty much need to do it, but it's not too bad, just meticulous and a little time-consuming. I would recommend that look back at BMWHD's writeup on his IMS install for guidance. It served me well.
hey cwgoff,
Glad to here that all went well at the Tour de Apalachiacola. My KLX300 tank should be here in the next day or two so your thoughts are appreciated. I am planning on doing the tank, handle bars w/ new grips, hand guards, turn signals, and the big bore allat the same time. (Maybe the pumper too, just don't tell my wife).
I am hoping to have it readyforSpring riding. (31/2' of snow right now).
Doesn't the KLX300 run with outradiator fans?Mine did come on a couple of times last summer so I'm sure I will install after market ones to to be on the safe side. And Engine Ice for coolant.

mmatz, yeah, I am pretty sure the 300 does not have a fan. The difference, I guess, comes from how the two bikes are supposed to be used. With the 250, there is the expectation that you might find yourself in stop-and-go traffic, whereas the 300 is expected to be pretty much moving the whole time it is running. Either way, you will rarely need the fan, but it is good to have it just in case.
Good luck with all of those upgrades. You will have a amazing bike in the Spring.
Regards, Chris

cwgoff,
Which fans did you order?
2.6 gallons is going to be acceptable but I would still like to see what kind of offering Clarke Manufacturing can come up with. And I concur with you guys. As stock looking as possible with minimal mods.
