When I figure out why cant I just use 12 front spocket and leave stock chain and stock rear spocket. Why use 13 or higher on front. Then upgrade rear spocket and new chains spend more money on it. Why not go for 12-42? Cheaper to buy 12 front spocket and the gear ratio will be 3.5.. Will that work?

It will work but a 12 tooth sprocket is small and flexes the chain a lot more than a 13 or 14. It will accelerate chain/sprocket wear. How much? Not sure, I wouldnt be too concerned about it though. Worst case scenario you buy the 12t it wears the chain out and your forced to buy new counter sprocket, rear sprocket and chain, with the price of a 12t, you'd be out 10 bucks?
