I keep reading where FCRs are prone to wear and the used ones are often worn out, which could complicate getting one jetted correctly even more

This is true you have to find a nice one like the one I bought off ebay
it is like mint the only thing that really wears is the slide and that is usually caused by the owner did not keep his air filter clean how ever the fcr is more a road bike carb where the fcr mx is definitely A off road carb but people want more dough for the fcr than they do for a fcr mx
as far as jetting no problem I can jet any thing been doing it O for about
45 years.
Thats why i like the fcr series They have a lot of adjustably
Every major race thumper runs one

Potter launched the bike by putting the bike on the rear stand, winding it up and dropping off the stand. I remember the guys in the area talking about him when he visited tracks in Ohio. Hot Rod Deluxe had a note about another similar situation. "Sneaky Pete" Robinson built in a set of lever operated jacks, getting the back wheels of his rail up off the pavement, spinning to speed before dropping the car. Other drivers complained and the NHRA banned the set up.

Kind of amazing what riders/drivers did in the early years.

In a weird sidebar to E.J. Potter, his brother, Charlie Potter, was a member of the Bandido motorcycle gang in San Antonio, TX back in the late 60's when I was finishing high school. I can't swear to that, but it was the "common" knowledge at the time. If true, that would be an interesting divergence into motorcycling by two brothers.

Maybe EJ started the "Michigan Mafia" and his brother felt left out.
