I over-torqued a screw and it broke-in a bad spot

Yep, spot on Gavin, your method is the method I have also used and it works well if a bit of the bolt is exposed.

Helicoils are indeed a last resort and will only be needed should you stuff it up. This is normally when trying to make it easier by not removing the side cover. In the end you make it worse.

Leave it alone until you have to take off the cover. Deal with it then by taking the cover off and use vice grips to grab hold of the end of the bolt and undo it.

If I remember, the bolt is only like 1/4 inch across, and if its broke off inside a ways, there is no way you can center punch it. Just take off the cover.
