Default First ride today

I picked up a new 2009 KLX250s yesterday. I took my first ride today. 52 miles. (my butt is sore)
The owners manual recommends keeping it under 4,000 rpm for the first 500 miles. Are they serious? Thats like 35mph in high gear.
All in all it ,was a nice ride and I think I will enjoy this bike.
I can see some frackle in the near future.
More comfortable seat.
Luggage rack.
lowering links.
My former bike was a KLR650, so I'm an experanced frackler.

Welcome to the world of '09 KLXs. I've taken this first inexpensive step to seat comfort with a Wal-Mart ATV seat pad made by stearns. For less than $20 it is worth it.

personally, i think 6000 is fine for the first 500, just dont beat the snot out of it. the most important thing is to change your oil before 250 miles, and again at about 1000. after that its up to you, but i change mine every 1000 cus it only holds 1.5 qts. welcome to the forum too, klx is like a better klr without the power and stuff falling off all the time, but for now i would still Keep Loctight Ready.

Welcome to the forum and I agree the seats are a real pain in the ***. I put 180 miles on mine after I bought it in October and never did get used to the seat. My 94 kx250 seat is very comfortable compared to the KLX seat. I am considering switching the foam on it if the foam will work from a KX. And about the break in I could do about 46 mph but just tried to keep it below 55 mph.

LOL. Yeah, I agree. It's impossible to ride the bike at any speed following that schedule.

Congrats on the new bike.

Welcome, I have had mine a few months and LOVE it.
I kept it below 6K for about 250 miles, then hit 8K a few times after that.
But I have basically ran it hard the entire time.
I hit 850 miles the other day, had the fluids changed, pipe, header, filter, and rejet, made the bike so much better, better bottom end, and it starts much easier.

have fun!

I went with the mototune type break-in and can't tell it hurt anything. There was no way I was going to keep the rpms that low for that long as it is against my religion.

The powerband doesn't really get going until 5000 rpm. Shifting at 4000 means coming into the next gear up at 3000 rpm which is going to really lug the engine, especially going up a hill. I was always under the impression that lugging an engine is one of the worst things that can be done to it, puts a lot of strain on the rod or head gasket, or something. (I'm not a mechanic, this is just what I've heard)
