Here is a great resource on the XT225 site for air filter maintenance. Great pictures, I know its not a Kawasaki but take a look at the pictures of how to clean and oil an air filter, very nicely done.

Reed valves are a two-stroke thing. They're used on the intake side mostly to prevent the Fuel/Air mixture from escaping back out the intake port during the up stroke. Think of them like a check valve or a heart valve that lets something pass only one direction.

It's called a reed valve because... they look like reeds you would use on a muscial instrument.

I would recommend using an actual air-filter oil, not 2-cycle or 10w-40...
Air filter oils are much more tacky than regular oils, which makes them catch dirt much better.
Exactly! I got the Kawichem filter recharge kit which includes oil and cleaner. The cleaner is basically powdered soap that you mix with hot water and use to clean the old oil and dirt out. Then you apply the supplied filter oil which is thinned down with alcohol for distributing throughout the filter. Saturate the filter, then sqeeze every bit of it out that you can - this ensures good coverage. Do this *before* the alcohol evaporates and it squeezes out pretty easily. After the alcohol evaporates in 15 minutes or so, the oil is *very* sticky and tacky which traps the fine dust particles and keeps them out of your engine where they would scour the insides of your engine like sand paper.

yep, do not use motor oil as it is not made for air filters. i just bought a new Uni-Filter which I would recommend over your choked up junk oem one. Get one of them for $25 or so, along with some aerosol air filter oil and call it a day. Seems people want to complicate things so much on this forum. Simplicity is a man's best friend. The stock filter needs replaced asap as I found out yesterday. You'll gain low-end, pair that Uni-Filter with a 13-tooth cs sprocket and you'll have a new bike for a little less than $40. Oh, the possibilities are endless.
Spot on Iowaguy, just a little extra once you have your nice new uni-filter or you clean the stock filter and oil it I suggest you go to a pool supplies place and purchase a pack of pool filter socks (this is an example only I suggest you go to a local shop and get the right size for your bike)
when you get them home oil them lightly and put them over your bike air filter. When it gets dirty or after a big days ride pull it off and either toss it and do a new one or clean and reoil. Much cheaper and easier than doing the air filter. People racing and doing enduros use them all the time. You can buy ones made for bikes but they are about 5 times more expensive.

Cheers

Garry

I use the PJ1 Foam Filter Cleaner Spray, and PJ1 Foam Filter Treatment Spray. The Oil is super tacky, and I do mean super. Check it out, I got mine at the bike shop.
