Default carb leaking gas

Hey guys,

My buddy just gave me a 1995 KLX 250 and I am trying to get it running. He said it ran last year. However, when I put gas in it there is gas leaking out of the carb at the Float Chamber O-ring; is that a common part to go out. Once I get this fixed and get a new spark plug she should be ready to fire up. Also, is this part easy to fix or should I take the carb to a professional mechanic and have them do it? Thanks for any help you can provide.

If your sure its coming from that joint on the carb (check for cracked fuel lines, or an open petcock) pull the carb Making sure you pay attention to where every thing was before you removed it, (digital cameras are great for taking reference shots before dis-assembly) You may have a loose bowl or a cracked o-ring. Dig into it.

I would turn off the gas and try to start it. It may fire. Run it till the carb is low and turn the gas back on. Its worth a shot. If it still leaks after a little futzing like tapping the carb with a screw driver and running it till the carb is dry a couple times, remove and clean or rebuild the carb, you will probably have to order the o ring gasket and a needle for the float.

Like the guy said above, look for dry cracked hoses, and the carb mount. No sucking air allowed.

A new spark plug is always good and cheap insurance. Fresh gas is your friend.

Let us know how it goes.

If it sat for a long time the float could be stuck. I had this happen on another bike.

I am on vacation, once I get back I will try these. I hope it works. Is the best way to get a manual by buying the $15 one online?

Good luck on the carb, and buy your buddy a drink or two. A friend who gives you a motorcycle is a true saint!
