Default Cannot shift out of N.

I was trying to shift into 1st and it was being fussy like always... I roleed the bike a little and revved it too then when it sounded and felt like I finally shifted, it was still in Neutral.... The lever moves freely alll the way up and down without the clutch in, and feels as if it is touching nothing on the inside.

Did you lay your bike over on the left side recently?

What he said...

Assuming you have an '09 or '10 model? It's likely a broken shift star. Refer to the sticky threads.
