Check all the connections on the battery, starter motor, and relay both for corrsion and tightness.

Yes start with a new battery, but also read some of the posts on here about hard starting. If the bike has sat, or is going to sit for a few days, or weeks, or longer make sure to shut off the fuel and run the gas out of the carb. That way it will actually start the next time you want it to. Oh and welcome to the forums. When you get a chance post up an intro in the new members area.

I see everyone always say how weak the stock battery is.. I must have gotten a misfit because my battery is strong like bull!

First test was over the winter.. Maybe three months of the bike sitting in my garage.. No tender, nothing disconnected... Started first press of the button in the spring.

I can stop in the woods and leave my headlight on for upwards of 15-20 mins and never had the battery go weak on me.

I dunno, maybe it's a super-battery!

The KLX is notorious for being a warm blooded machine, dont frett. I have an 09 and its the same but there are things you can do to make it easy to start. First of all as was previously mentioned, make sure if your bike is going to sit for more than a few days to turn the fuel line to off, and let the bike run a bit (preferrably until it stops).

Next time you go to start it, just pull the choke, turn the fuel line on and hit the starter, if it doesnt catch just give it a tiny bit of throttle.

If you have a voltmeter put the red lead on the negative cable at the battery. Then put the black lead on the chrome starter bolt(either one) on the left side of the bike. Crank the engine and if the meter reads ANYTHING over .4 or .5volts. You have a bad ground, mine was 2.2 volts. Meaning 2.2 volts of electrical potential was not returning to the battery. Good luck and keep us posted .......BTW if you want to try to jump start your bike. Hook the positive cable to the battery like normal. AND the negative cable straight to frame or if you can clip it to the starter motor(bolts) try that.
I gotta give clgdswr a big tip of the hat for his post on adding a ground wire.

The '07 D-Tracker I just bought was often turning over slow when starting , sometimes not turning over at all etc. Then I stumbled onto this thread-just about the only one I have seen on the internet addressing the starter to battery ground wire technique for the KLX.

I hooked up the ground wire yesterday and a few minutes ago went out for a morning cold start - it spun over like a top and fired right up

Interestingly... I'd sprayed the starter mounting bolts with WD-40 a couple days ago in prep for removing one or both of them, and afterwards the bike would turn over very slowly when starting-like there had been a drain on the battery while it was sitting idle. I realized it was the oil making the bad ground situation even worse.

Much, much better now!

I think everyone with electric start should do this cheap and effective mod

Default 2007 klx250s

I had the same problem with my 2007 klx250 with the starter relay clicking when pushing the start button. Turns out it was a bad connection at the starter. When I tapped the started with my flashlight it would turn over. I pulled back the rubber cover where the ground is connected on top of the starter and I tightened the nut (10mm). Voila...good as new.

Hope this helps someone.
