Default points...

when the spark plug does its thing, is the piston at TDC??
Also for the spark to do its thing is the gap between the points just opening, fully open or just closing??

Cheers, Andrew.

A little bit of an odd question, is there a beer riding on this?

The timing on the sparkplug will not be TDC, as I recall the plug fires slightly before TDC to allow the flame to propagate and begin pushing the piston downward immediately after TDC, otherwise there will be a dead zone when the piston would be sapping power from the engine to drag it back down.

Not sure on the points. the key factor is the power surge that occurs when the connection opened or closed (not sure which) but the spark occurs in the middle when the electicity arcs across the gap as I recall (havent messed with points much)

Good luck.

I had read somewhere on how the spark plug fires off AT TDC so that by the time the cranks rotate to the point where the piston can be shoved back down, the explosion will have pressurized enough to force the piston down.

OKAY, its been over a year and boy has it been a good one .
Got the bike running, took it off roading like it was intended, and had lots of ups and downs .

However, both the engine i was using and the spare i had were burning oil.....this made me sad.
Sailed through the MOT this year and i figured i would check the barrel in one of the engines and see if it need a rebore etc....

Opened her up and the barrel was SMOOOOTH, like the bonnet of a porsche.
So, changed the rings and gaskets.....slung it in the bike and HEY, it ran still .

HOWEVER, there is an electrical problem thats making me loose sleep, while the bike runs, its not even remotely as smooth as it was before rebuild.
over the past year ive become a master of timing and thats not them problem.....while running if i physically open the points so they NEVER close, the bike carries on running..... theoretically i could remove the base plate and ATU.....

HOW is this happening and if someone knowes how to stop it, i would be their friend FOREVER!!!!

Cheers, Andrew.
