Default 06 zzr starting problem

It all started by letting one of my friends ride my bike "real smart" He laid it down and craked the stator cover. I replaced it and put oil back in it and went to take it for a test drive. the bike started and it seemed to run fine. i took it down the road and the oil light came on and before i had a chance to doa nything, i heard something snap and the bike stalled. i pulled off to the side of the road and tried to start it. the starter was turning but it was not cranking the engine. got it home, pulled off the stator cover and it spun the starter. it turned the gear behind the magnet but the crank is not turning. just seeing if anyone might know what broke or what i can do to fix it. thanks!

and prolly no compression readings?

are you knowing the lack of crank movement by the timing window?

ya it was real weird The starter spins with no problem and it spins the gear behind the magnet and it was just one quick noise no ticking or clunking.

Not sure, I do not have that ride or manual handy to check it out. Can you turn it over by hand and get any compression readings?

The gear is on a keyway just as the flywheel (magnet) is. Now, usually the 2 are riveted together as one piece, so pulling the flywheel off is the only way to really look at it. It could be a sheered key.

I did not try to turn it by hand but if that keyway broke is that part of the crank or is it a part that can be replaced

I took the cover off again and used a socket and turned the nut that in front of the magnet and it felt like it was turning over the engine you could feel the diffrent parts of the stroke but was not real hard, I have only done this on car engine not sure how it compaires. The gear behind the magnet free spun clockwise. I even called a dealer and they said they have no clue what it could be. THIS SUCKS
