First bike in 20 years
I bought my first bike in 20 years today. A 1989 KDX200 in excellent condition. This thing was in storage for 15 years when the previous owner bought it 3 years ago. He went through it and cleaned and lubed everything. His son barely used it, mainly just rode it two miles down the road to see his girlfriend. Its in great shape. My main concern is that i've never owned a two stroke before, or a water cooled bike either. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions on what I should be doing or what I should look out for when riding and maintaining my new prized possession. I don't plan on doing any modifications as it runs great and with my limited experience I don't think I need any more power. Thanks in advance.

Glad to have you with us, nogood! My only suggestion would be to make sure you run a good quality oil in your fuel. I've used Lucas synthetic with good success. Just stick with a low ash, name brand. Don't use the cheap-o WalMart stuff, or when you re-ring or replace the head gasket down the road, you'll see black gum. I'd replace the coolant, also. Worn out coolant does bad, bad things. (Thoroughly flush before you refill!!)
Gear up; ride safe!!

Since its a two stroke, you wont need any additional power, just watch the power band and hang on..LOL Welcome to the forums! Glad to have you aboard. The last two stroke I owned was a Suzuki LT 250R Quadracer back in the early 90's, man that thing was fast. Be careful, it can bite you like a snake hidden in the grass. Keep an eye on the sprockets, on bikes like that they tend to wear out faster than on 4 stroke bikes. And like Jeff said, use good mix, keep an eye on the coolant and dont ride too slow or it will foul the plug. They aren't made to putt around the driveway, they need to be opened up a little. Other than that, ride safe and hang on!!!

Welcome! Those are such good bikes. I had a 95 KDX 200 with pretty much every performance part. Thing was awesome! couldnt tear it up. I always ran belray stuff like MC1 or H1R in my KDX and KX bikes. Never had a prob with them. Dont forget to repack that muffler. Makes a diff with fresh packing.

I ran MC1 belray for a few yrs on different two smokes with good success. Yamilube on the banshees was the norm here. So yes, a good oil is mandatory. I plan on using the Belray or the amsoil next on the kdx 80.
Congrats on the new ride and enjoy. Welcome to KF
