Oil in Airbox
I have a new 2007 Vulcan 2000 Classic LT. At 400 miles on the bike I noticed a little oil coming out of the air box. I removed the cover and there was quite a bit of oil laying in the bottom of the box. The bike has 1000 miles on it and I have checked it twice since then and it looks like both times after the initial check it has maybe 2 ounces in the bottom of the air box. Is this normal? It had not made any difference on the dipstick and the bike seems to run fine. I am getting right at 40 MPG with lots of power. The bike has not been dumped and the crankcase is not overfilled. It goes in for service on July 12. I am just trying to find answers. The service rep at the dealer asked if the bike had been dumped or if the crankcase was over filled. I told him it was a little over the full mark so I sucked 6 ounces out of the crankcase with a syringe. It's now right on the full mark. Any thoughts from other owners or mechanics?
There should be a hose coming off the airbox that acts like a pressure equilizer/EGR valve. It's possible the hose is blocked or (there may even be a "filter" of sorts in-line) the filter or valve is closed. Some bikes have a crankcase breather somewhere. You might check any plumbing on the airbox you can see. It sounds like it's a back-pressure issue and some oil mist is getting into the airbox. Not a horrible problem; it won't ruin your bike.
Even though the air cleaner is a "wet" cleaner, it does appear that there is either too much oil mist getting up into the airbox or not enough getting out. I looked at a diagram online and there isa valve in the breather line to the airbox that may be the culprit. It will be on my list when the bike goes in for service next Saturday.
