Default bike will not start

I have an 06 zzr600. I was on the way to work the other day when it shut down at a stop light and wouldnt start. It doesnt even turn over when I press the starter switch. It was low on oil(almost empty) so I put some oil in it and tried that. Still wouldnt start. I jumped the solenoid and it started right up. Is this a bad starter solenoid? Or is it a bigger problem? Thanks

How are the connections at the battery? I know it is probably not the answer, but mine started to do that for a while and it was a loose bolt causing intermittent contact.

I like to start with the starter button. Then progress from there. Checking voltage and making sure that switches and relays are doing there job.

Yep I agree, start with all of the simple stuff and rule those out first.
