What driving fast and carless gets you...
I dont like the idea that everyone wants to blame the parents here or their lack of parental guidance. We where all there at one piont in our lives and we drove the **** out of our cars, sportscar or not. And as a parent we can not be by our kids side 24/7, just the knowledge and values we try to teach to our little ones in hopes that they will make rational decisions.
Dragone - he was a kid at the time... more parental involvement was much needed.
Lemac - there is a world of difference between driving the hell out of an under-powered mid 80's grand am, and an over-powered Neon SRT - which is unsafe at stressed usage even without the SRT stuff. My dad didn't let me get a Boss 302 for my first ride, even though I had the money and the deal all worked out and ready to go. There is a damn good reason he didn't let me get that as my first ride. Why the hell would these parents let him get a borderline rally car as his first ride? Sorry... yeah - it is normal for the kid to want the rocket as his first ride... it is not normal for the parents to allow him to get it.

+1
the first time I was out driving on my own I had to see what my dad's 4 cylinder S-10 would do, downhill with a tail wind i could just barely peg that thing at 90. What ever car you have you are going to drive the hell out of it as a kid, thats your job, my parents werent the least bit suprised when I can home with my first ticket, in my mom's full size van no less, coulda made a motor home out of that thing it was so big, but I took it to its top speed, shooting past everyone on the freeway like a mad man. My mom knew it my Dad knew it they aren't stupid. and they also knew that if they bought me a car that could do 150, it would only be a matter of hours before it met that speed. And let me tell you I learned some lessons in the slow cars beforeI moved up to my 300zx, like how to control a car in a slide, blew out a tire learning that one. That doesnt mean that I didnt have anything else to learn after I moved up, but those early lessons would have been alot more dangerous if my parents provided me with a 200HP 155 MPH lesson in Torque Steer.

Yeah I agree to a point, but what if you recked your so called slow car who would you blame it on then?" If it was faster I would of got out of the way"
Just like a bike if you have a 1000 or a 500 even a 250 if **** happens it dont matter what your driving. I didnt see an article on it so I dont know any details, but it looked like it was on the highway. Did someone pull in front or did he have a blowout or did he just not know how to drive. And an late 80's foxbody with rear wheel drive can do some damage as a first for some. I had no troubles with a car till I turned 23 lol. **** happens and yes some people dont deserve sports cars, and thats what somebody prolly said when I had my 93 rx7 up on a curb. But thats what is great about this forum we all have different opinions... and this is jmo and .02

I agree with you Lemac - but what was your first road/sportbike? It damn sure wasn't a Busa...
hehehe you follow me on that? Like who was that NFL guy from Pitt I think it was last year... first bike ever - Busa. Wrecked it... and bad. If he woulda learned smaller and worked up (like we have all likely done in our cars and bikes), the wreck probably wouldn't have happened, or if it did - it woulda been a lot less serious.
The Neon is a horrible chassis to begin with. Simply putting a hopped up motor in it and some stiffer springs doesn't mean it is ready to run. Jesus - I wouldn't let anyone drive the non-srt version, let alone put it under the right foot of a teeny-bop as his first ride. Give him a 3 cyl Metro or a Pinto... not an over-powered, under-handling rocket.

THat would have been The QB for the steelers Roethlisburger but that wreck wasnt his fault SRO a dumbass cager turned in front of him when he had the green light. the wreck was no fault of his. but that is a very good point. he should not ahve had that as his first car definately some poor decisions on the part of the parents.
damn those damn srt4s are death traps, we just had one litterally get torn in half when it hit a tree, the passengers all were wearing seat belts but the two seinors in the back were killed.
