Poker Run?
I am going on a police escorted poker run this weekend to raise money for a little boy who has an inoperable brain tumor [&o]. I have never been on one and was wondering if you guys could tell me what to expect? My father in law works with the boy's uncle and we HAVE to go for the cause. I feel terrible for the family and feel I need to contribute ANYTHING I can.
I have never been on a poker run either shon. But I believe that they give you a card at the start and a map of the route with stops marked. At each stop you get another card, at the end point, the best hand wins.
Sounds like you are going out for a great cause. My prayers go out to the little guy and his family.

Poker Runs are great. Yeah, you get a card and at every stop you get a card, I forget how the rules work cause it's been awhile since I have been on one, but you have to know the area which you are doing the poker run.. Trust me it ends up being a lot of fun! Just as Bluebird said.
I help coordinate poker runs for our local offshore powerboat organization (read: "cigarette boats") and it is a lot of fun. It usually ends up being a speed contest, but the guys that do run hard do so safely... Lake Michigan is a big pond. A couple of times people have gotten out of line and we simply boot them from the run and the rest of the season. The one thing we don't want is a liability and people getting hurt. If this is a bike poker run, I can understand why they are putting a police escort on it.
If not - it would get pretty crazy, I'm sure.
Having a speed contest with a poker run doesn't make any sense as there is no prize for completing your hand first. You pick up a card at each stop and at the end the team/ride with the best hand wins a token prize and a trophy, and the money raised in entry fees and donations goes to the party in question. Usually a dinner or other social event at the last stop and that is where everything is tallied and the results posted and the check given to the charity...
It will be fun... you should enjoy it.

Cool, that actually sounds like fun. I am sure there are going to be a whole lot of bikes going on this b/c the guy works for the NYSDOT and they ALL know eachother. And I don't think there will be any speed contests b/c like I said, it is police escorted. Thanks for the info guys.
