Nice camera....what would just the body and the standard lens go for....not all the other goodies you bought.

The body by itself is around $1600. And the lens that came with the combo I got is a $700 lens. I didn't really save much by getting the combo together, but I do really like this lens which is a good all round utility lens from pretty wide angle to 11x zoom with autofocus, manual override, and image stabilization. So I went ahead and got that combo.

But I was flipping through the lenses on B&H yesterday and there are some seriously sweet (and expensive) lenses available - everything from super high light gathering but otherwise rather ordinary 50mm lenses to the ultimate paparazzi lenses that can capture a close-up of Britney from a 1/4 mile away. I doubt I'll be delving into that realm any time soon - some of those lenses are more expensive than a brand new KTM. Same with some of the nicer camera bodies, too. Check out the price on a Nikon D3x for example. Or a Canon EOS-1Ds. And if those prices make you blink, don't even click on the Hasselblad's.

So the D300 w/18-200mm lens I got, while very very nice for me, is still a mid-level camera and lens combo. It'll do everything I need, though, and then some. And then some more.

I definitely wouldn't recommend buying anything of this magnitude without approval of the wife, who is our house manages the bills and the checkbook. Smart husbands learn that is it is NOT easier to ask for forgiveness than it is for permission. At least if you want to stay married for very long. 19 years and counting, here.

But I had a good excuse. I just told my wife that it would eventually pay for itself. What I neglected to mention is that it would take about 14 years.

Ha ha, j/k. I've already put it to work. At this rate, it should only take about 12.5 years before it earns its keep.
