Default 3rd gear fall

i have a 98 zx7r and when it is running in neutral it runs great when I'm driving 1st and 2nd gear go great but when i hit 3rd it just starts sputtering and backfires and has no power i changed the pick up coil and CDI box could it possibly be due to neutral safety switch when i remove neutral safety switch should oil run out what should i do

Welcome to KF.

At what engine load and throttle are you referring to when you say it runs fine, then in 3rd it suddenly starts sputtering?

first and second you can cruz or go ***** out fine 3rd you can go wide open 70 mph max back fires and booges back to second fine 4th 5th wont barly go i feel its electrical but not sure also starts and idles fine i think somethink is disrupting the spark thats why i thought neutral switch cause neutral light doesnt come on and that barrel in there turns when shifting first second it turnd fine 3rd bike has to run to hit third gear but when you take neutral switch off oil comes out so not sure how that barrel in there turns in third to possibly disrupt spark i dont know just guessing along hear

hmm, the neutral safety switch does not stand out as a possible cause for the lack of 3rd gear power.

Not knowing how many miles on your ride, what your compression tests turned out to be, the last valve adjustment, etc makes it abit rough to figure out just yet. I would assume that this is a recent issue. The plug reads tell you what? You replaced the pickup coil but how did the ignition coils test out? A weak spark plug boot and wire will also cause issues. section 15 of your manual.

motor is pretty fresh plugs look good coils check out good not sure on last valve adjustment would the ignition key switch cause any issues with the CDI not getting full power i have issues with it you have to wiggle key to get the starter working

Do you actually have a CDI conversion on your ride? Or are you referring to the IC ignitor?

I dont know how advanced the computer is on a 98 but as far as I know the bike has no clue what gear its in at all, it only knows the RPM and reacts to the load no matter what speed the wheels are turning. my only guess is that the motor cant keep up with the load produced by the higher gears in which case I would say fuel delivery, fuel supply, or ignition. Since you can go all out up to 70, I'm leaning towards supply. When you get done with the ignition, I'd check tank venting, fuel flow, fuel filter, fuel pressure, float adjustment, and float needles. Good luck!

as mentioned, verify proper charging from the alternator. You will get a cut out during high speeds without proper voltage supply. (a bad belt or alternator for example)
