Yeah, I have the same problem sometimes. I usually just pump the clutch once or twice while sitting at the light, then it will just drop into 1st when I need it to. Recently, I have just started leaving it in gear at the light. A buddy of mine (not a good source) claims that leaving it in gear at the light may wear out my throwout bearing. Anyone know if there's any truth to that?

Also, is downshifting into 1st gear safe for the tranny and such? I usually avoid it because of how much damn noise the transmission makes just by selecting the gear (not engaging the clutch yet). I'm not saying I would down shift at some rediculous speed. Something like 10-15 mph. Any ideas?

As a few have already said just let go of the clutch and pull it back in. Works everytime.

There is an advantage and disadvantage to keeping it in gear at a stop. The advantage is if you need to get uot of the way, you're ready to go. I was almost rear ended but was able to get out of the way. The disadvantage is that there is drag on the engine and clutch when you hold the lever in gear. It makes your clutch get hotter and the motor also due to the slight drag/ friction from the oil between the plates. For me it all depends on if it's a long light or a short one and if cars are stopped behind me already.

If you are banging down the gears after stopping, nothing wrong with that BTW, like already said just release the clutch a little to rock the bike and then you should be able to make it to neutral. Mine does the same as well.
