97 zx6? help and or suggestions,please
Hey Guys, I pretty much did a copy and paste from my " New guy introduction" post: Here it goes.
After 17 years of not riding Kaw's(82 k440)im back with a ninja project and in need of some help. Years have gone by and have been through Honda's, Yam's, Zook's but never done a Ninja project so here we go!
After hounding my "friend" for years to give me back my $1000.00 that i loaned him many years ago he decided to give me a supposed ex doug polenzx6rracebike which my friend used to race with . Funny i dont rememberPolenracing a 6 and this guys a prettygood story fabricator but???I saw my friend at the track a long time ago with this bike an i know it moves so when he said "here take this old zx since i owe you money and shut up!". Well i did and finallly looking it over to convert i back to street as well as the ocassional trackday bike but running into probs.
First off : Salvage titled frame, yeah, cant use that on the street here in Illinois! I had the Vin run and comes back no record with Secretary of State. If a vehicle hasnt been registered within 7years here the info is purged from the system and you have to know all info exactly to retitle it.
Second: really didnt know what year it was since everything is rattlecan flat black and the only thing i have to go by is the vin and motor number. According to theWiki that the VIN (JKAZX4F17VA03XXXX) is a 1997ZX600. Dida search and found that the framelooks like mine but when searching ebayfound all othe ZX frames to be a separate frame and rear subfame. This one is a solid welded frame and rear subframe. Was this the onlyyear that they did this?
What im mainly looking for is to finda frame thati will be able to swap over the motor, suspension and wiring over without any mods. It currently has no plastics, tank or guages but i can retro a newer set of race plastic on it with a piaaheadlight for the street. I guess i just need to know what are my options with this pile of parts before i get crackin and find out it was a bigger waste of money.
Guess my other alternative is to part it out andhopefully make my money back.
Anyone have any answers to this dilemma? I will post some pics latersoyou can see what im dealing with.If anyone has any info it would be great! I will take a pic or two of what i have hopefully tomorrow.
The following pic is from what i found from the Wiki and this is the same style frame that i have but in rattlecan flat black.

Keep it as a track or stunt bike. Doug Polen Huh? That guy was one of the best racer's in the world! If that washis bike, that's pretty awesome!

Put some fresh gas in, drain the carbs through with fresh gasagain and change the oil & filter. Then try to start it and see what happens. How long was it sitting and the last time it ran?
did all that. it runs i just have to jump it everytime. it needs front brake fluid besides that i think it is road worthy. it's pretty dirty so i think it's sat for a while. here's a bigger pic

Get a new battery and start washing/ cleaning. They are great sport touring bikes. I remember when this model first came out in 88. It was huge compared to the 85-87 it replaced but it was fast as HELL! Lot's of power!
ORIGINAL: recker59
yeah it needs a bath, and i'll get a battery soon maybe tomorrow. my problem is i know nothing about it. is it worth some work or should i just ride it to the ground?
