Default is a big free play on rear wheel and axle normal?

Hi,
I have a 2007 Ninja 650r. I've been trying to find out why it makes clunking sound every time I change gear (all gears). I noticed when I tried to adjust the chain that the rear wheel has about 1/8 of turn free play before the chain sprocket moves or engage ( in either direction). Is that normal?

Something is wrong there. Do these have the cush drive inserts in the wheels rim? ( a rubber insert that fits in the rim and the sprocket) I have to replace those every so often in my zx7.

@Dragone#19 I think you're right on the money. As I was researching, I got across this video on changing the wheel bearing and I saw the crush drive. I have a very good feeling that is the problem. My original issue is that every time I change gear (on all gears), there is a clucking sound when the gears engage. I will be taking the rear wheel off to inspect soon. Thank you, your replay gave me confidence.
