starting suggestions (solenoid shot)
So the starter soleenoid os shot on my bike. The previous owner put a bolt in it that I must pull to get the starter to engage. I can do this when the key is in the run position or in the start position. Any suggestions which would work best? I tried to start the bike over the weekend and I couldn't get it going... doesn't seem like the starter wants to go continuously when I pull on the bolt. The bike has been sitting in my shed the last few weeks so it may be that the battery is weak, so I guess maybe trying to jump it from my car would work. Also, since the solenoid is shot I have to turn the lights on by hooking an allegator clip up under the seat. PITA! Any suggestions for where I could get a replacement solenoid?
Thanks.

advance auto.
i think they sell a heavy duty tractor starter solenoid for like 9 bucks or something. really any 12 volt stand alone solenoid should work.
hell, a screwdriver would do the trick lol.
im just guessing, but id bet thats what the bolt that you use now is doing. just bridging the gap.
if you try to jump it from your car, make sure the car isnt running. if it is running, thats a good way to fry your voltage regulator. long story short, the car makes more juice than the bike. the voltage regulator in the bike is playing tug of war with the voltage regulator in the car. and the bike will always lose.

Thanks for the heads up on the car running... i would have assumed I needed it to be running. As far as the tractor solenoid, would it have the proper connection for turning on the head/taillights or would I continue to have to use the allegator clip? I suppose I should give advance auto a call and see what they have to offer.
Thanks.

so I broke down and went to the kawi dealer and got the factory replacment solenoid. Much pricier, but It's nice peace of mind to know the right part is in the right place and I can actually start my bike with the start button instead of yankin on a bolt under the fairings. Still would not start though, had to start the taurus and let it charge the bike's battery for a while before the starter motor would even turn. I don't think my old man neighbor appreciated my bike idleing outside his bedroom window after 10pm last night (he is old, ya know?) but oh well, I was happy to have the the thing start.
I'm relieved too. Can't beat the peace of mind knowing something is done right. I don't know much about the bike, not like I used to know my old cars. I could have the dash apart and back together in just a few minutes to do wiring for the stereo and such. Before I was familiar with my first car, though, I managed to set my dash on fire... I'd like to avoid a situation like that with the bike.
