Default speedo issue

so i have a 89 ex500 and my speedo im pretty sure is off, possibly up to 15 mph, i dont see how this could be possible with a cord driven speedo, and im almost positive the tire is the proper size, if not it will be in the next few days when the new ones are put on. Also jus a quick side question whats yr mpgs like? I put 2.6 gal in and only got like 50 miles although it seems to be doin better now, first time its actually been rode in god knows how long

That cable is gear driven. So the tooth count on the gear corresponds to a ratio that dictates the readout when coupled to another gear or ring. The gear assembly needs maintained. Cleaning, lubed and inspected. It is not uncommon for that assembly to wear out due to pressure washing, grit and grime from yrs of use, or like you mentioned, from lack of use.

Since the ride has sat for so long, cleaning and adjusting the carbs would be a must do item. My 05 EX500 has had a high of 68 mpg, but after richening things up abit, I am in the 55 mpg area at the moment.

Doesn't really matter, you will feel it mesh when you place it, just make sure that the cable attachment position is towards the rear of the axle.
