hey all, the bikes been sitting outside for alittle over a week, havent been riding much cause of work and stuff... i started it 2day and it does run when the choke is up... i let it warm up for about 15 min and when i put the choke back down the bike dies.. and when i do have the choke up and the bike running, and i give it alittle gas it dies again.. so what should i do? let it warm up longer?

 

My bike does the same thing. If I use the choke and then shut the choke off the bike dies. Then I try to start it with the choke off and it fires right up. I think the choke lever is somehow out of adjustment. But it really ticks me off.

p.s. I rarely have to use the choke. Only when the temperature outside is in the 50's.

It seems this is a fairly common prob, and not just related to your 250s... I think it has more to do with starting procedure. Just like every kind of carb car. Take an okd 307 olds. You pump her about 10 times in order to start her....lol

In the winter, I'll pump mine once, full choke, and crank. She'll fire up, run for about 5 secs and die. Pump her once more, 3/4 choke and she's good to go from there...

Maybe try and play around with different starting procedures, and see if that improves anything....

 

Have you figured out what is wrong yet? My does the exact same thing, only mine didn't start doing it until I dropped the bike. Now I can't keep it started.

 

Somebody on here had that same prob before after dropping the bike... If I remember right it was a sensor on the kickstand...I'll see if I can find that thread for ya...

 

that makes sense since I did drop it on the left side. If you could find the thread that would be great. In the mean time at least I have somewhere to start looking. Thanks alot.

I'm sure I'll run across it again.... I believed they jumped the wires together at that sensor to test it out...

 

ok i got the bike goin, i did the different starting procedures.. i pumped it once, full choke left it run for bout 10 min, turned the choke down it died, i pumped it again and no choke it started up and it ran good

 

Hi there, I am a noobie, at least in here. I haven't riden in more than 15 years and decided to buy myself a small bike to get back out there with. I bought a 1999 250, not the best looking bike but I figure its good enough to get myself used to it again. Anyway I have a problem similar to what you are describing. I knew the bike had a few problems when I bought it, and i wanted to be the one to work on it. The bike's battery is dead, so I had to jump it. The bike will run with the choke on but if the choke is turned off the bike dies. The guy I bought it from let the bike sit for almost a year, after he bought it from a guy who did lay it down on the left side as well. The kid replaced the spark plug but not the cap or wiring. I am looking for a place to start working on the machine.. any ideas at all would be great!!!

 

Whenever I have to put my motorcycle on choke, I'll get on it shortly after starting it, and ride a block or two with the choke on. That usually speeds up the warm-up process.

The kickstand sensor could have something to do with it, but only if you're in gear, and letting the clutch out. If it dies in neutral when you take off the choke, It's probably not the sensor.
