I'm a newer rider as well and I just started off with a Z1000 despite everything I've read that says to start small. Sure you have to be more careful on the throttle than you would with a little 250, but I wouldn't say its impossible to learn on. Anyway if you care I went with the bike that I liked the looks of the best, which happened to be the Z1000.

 

i just started also but since i'm a bigger guy i wasn't too comfortable on 500s so i got a 750R, i'd say IMO that is the BIGGEST to start with (depending on maturity). a 500 or 600 would be a great starter bike if your a slab **** and it depends on what u want of a bike u know? i've had good experience just takin it easy with my 750 but it has scared the hell outta me here and there. just look around and sit on bikes too to see what your comfortable with. i have a good friend that got his fundametals on a 500 then bought a busa 2 months later, i don't recommend this but he's been careful and it's treated him well. if your responsible and wanna bigger bike i'd say 500/600 if your the 'normal' 16-20yr old....get something small or start on a dirt bike.

allright you guys are the best i'll take all this into consideration and start testing out different bikes my friend has.. o yea is there some class i can take to get some time on the bike or atleast how to work everything

hey man my first bike ever was an 07 ninja zx6r it has alot of thump to it yes. but one thing that helped me learn was i just followed the break in rules. so i couldnt really open the bike up so i took the time breakin in the bike but also learning to get comfortable with the bike. the thing about a bike is common sense. if you use it have self control and are smart then you will be fine it will be the other drivers you have to watch for. also take the MSF course. also i wasnt a dirt rider or anything i learned to drive a truck at a young age and four wheelers but not dirt bikes and this was my first bike and it hasnt gotten away from me.

 

What are you talking about the ride not getting away from you BN? A crash is a crash. Well, most of the time and just be thankful if you are not injured when you do fall down. I fall down almost yearly!

 

Personally I would start on a 500 range bike. EX500, GS500, even a SV650. And this being your first bike, I wouldn't get anything brand new. When it falls over, and it will, or when you drop it, and you will, it won't hurt as bad a damaging a brand new bike. Then after you have put a few thousand miles on it, you can get about what you paid for it when you sell it.

Do take the MSF course. They teach you the very basics, like you know nothing at all. And you don't.
