Introduction and question about Z900RS
Hello everyone, New forum member here, longtime contributor on various automobile forums. Appreciate having the enthusiast community as support. I am a 44 year old single dad (2 little boys) and own a law firm in South Florida. I am a total gearhead, my first love was sports cars but I am into just about anything that has wheels and goes, and preferably has what I call a "soul." I have wanted to ride a motorcycle for the past 15 years, but kept getting involved with women who did not "approve." Never making that mistake again! I bought my first bike, a 2009 Kawasaki ER6-N in May. Had 21k miles, its in fantastic shape and I have added crash bars, re-upholstered the seat, changed all the fluids and replaced the seals and springs in the front shocks. The ER6-N was a great bike for me to learn on, its basically a de-tuned Ninja 600, fairly lightweight and very stable. I also have a 2000 BMW R1200C - I go out on longer rides sometimes with my HD enthusiast friends and I wanted a cruiser for the longer trips and highway use. It's a great bike too. A bit underpowered for a motorcycle but I can safely merge onto the highway and I do not ride fast, so who cares. I ride both bikes several times a week, sometimes just to put in 15 minutes of practicing low speed maneuvering in a parking lot. Being technically proficient at anything I do is important to me, and I understand the value of practice and hard work.
I am thinking about upgrading the ER6-N to a slightly used 2018 or 2019 Kawasaki Z900RS. The dealership where I bought the ER6-N has three of them in inventory. Once of the bikes was at the dealership back in May when I bought the ER6-N. There is nothing wrong with the ER6-N, its a great bike. It has decent torque down low and in midrange and it handles like a ballerina. But I am not enamored of the styling of the ER6-N, I like the retro-cool look much better. Also, I already have the itch to do modifications and don't see the sense in modifying a bike that I am already getting bored with.
So here is my question: It seems to me that there is not much of a market for the Z900RS because my local used bike dealership can't move them. I think there is a market for the retro bikes because they can't keep a Yamaha XSR900 on their floor for more than a week, and a BMW Scrambler they recently took in on a trade sold in less than week. The Kawasaki Z900RS seems to be to be a far better bike than the XS900. Is it just a micro-market condition (people in SoFL tend to value flash much more than quality) or is the market for the Z900RS just not very mature? As far as I can tell there Z900RS has no major pitfalls or design defects that would be a signal to an educator buyer to stay away. Appreciate anyone's thoughts, even if they are just guesses. TIA
